Rescuers pulled an 80-year-old woman from a car in a Deerfield Beach lake on Friday.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said it received a report about 11:30 a.m. of a Chevy Impala sinking in a lake behind 1026 Ashby D. at Century Village.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue officials said they believe Josefa Luz Garcia, 80, had backed out of a parking space at Century Village and kept reversing, going over an embankment and into the water.

Two people who were at the scene tried unsuccessfully to save Garcia, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.

Two BSO deputies arrived and dove into the water. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue paramedics arrived to help.

From Sky 10 overhead, divers could be seen searching the canal. Officials said the car was about 112 feet from the shore.

When they found the car, they broke a window and found Garcia inside.

BSO said Garcia was in full cardiac arrest by the time rescuers got her to shore. Paramedics were able to get her pulse going again on the way to North Broward Medical Center, investigators said.

Garcia was listed in critical condition.
